Now is the time to make a plan!
We are looking at one of the best weeks of the summer leading in to the Labour Day long weekend. You can still get a cabin from tonight until Friday September 4. Cabins are full for the long weekend. There are still campsites available for the holiday weekend, both with and without electricity and water.
Now is the time to make a plan!

Canadian Tire has a sign up in Bancroft. Funny, it used to be called Family Fishing Week. Kids have never needed fish licences (up to age 18), and seniors also don't need licences, so it's really Free Fishing for Adults Between the Ages of 18 and 65 Week.
July 4 to 11 are the posted dates. What a fabulous weekend!
The local trail bike ride was this past weekend, Father's Day. There seemed to be about half the participants of 2014. I had to blast in to Bancroft for building supplies on Friday, and the road seemed pretty quiet for a Friday pm. Because the weather has been so putrid the last couple of years for this weekend, it has been a wait and see for all of us for this holiday.
Here's what I see. Many fisherpersons, both camping and occupying cabins. 90% return clientele. Happy, prepared, realistic campers (only a little bother about black flies, and those are the newbies). Smudge fires going at a couple of sites. It's a free firewood weekend (lots of cleanup wood from opening up). Hardwood tag alder brush for great coals fast. Let the grilling begin! Pictures of fish caught and released this morning (darn bass aren't in season, can't keep 'em). The weather is incredibly flaky. Flies are not biting, but they are bothersome swarming. There are 22 types of black fly, and a lot of the first out of the gate are nonbiters. Only 2 types bite. The swallows are here in large numbers already, so it was likely the flies were going to be early. Fishing should be good. The last arrival called this a special event weekend. It is what you make it. Don't believe the hype. Late night (past midnight) skywatchers were treated to a fine display of shooting stars last night. The peak isn't until August 12, but there will be a full moon then, so the shower will wash out. The sliver of a moon sets early, so tonight should be good too if the skies stay clear.
Here we are at the longest day of the year. Hope you find some healing waters and a bonfire to observe this annual occasion in proper form.
Very wet out there, but things are supposed to get better. Hopefully the trails will be ok for the OFTR ride this weekend.
Hope the hummingbird is happy. He's been buzzing me on the porch, wanting his fuschia, which I finally acquired yesterday. Biggest, most wonderful purple flowered monster, and a smaller pink one for the other porch. Trail ride this weekend. Its the guys with matching bikes and outfits.
If you're looking for a place, there's only one cabin left, but lots of camping. The northern prairies are seeing snow too. It's definitely spring here though. Even though many placess are flooding this spring, the water level in the river here is low. Not sure how that can be, because certainly there was lots of snow to melt. Maybe OPG (Ontario Power Generation) took a page from the book of floods last spring, and drew the level in the reservoir down farther this past winter; there was probably a higher demand for electric power due to the prolonged cold, so it might be a natural adjustment.
At any rate, it is still possible to see the river topography at this point, unlike the last many springs. Now that the rains have backed off, it might mean we are looking at extensive sand beaches this season. That happens every ten years or so, and is always a big hit with vacationers. This season is almost finished. Time to start dreaming about next summer.
Make your dreams reality. Book early. Tell your friends. Get together, and make your own good time the best time EVAR in 2014. Full weeks are always the best deal. They make your weekend free. The full moon is going to likely make it difficult to see the meteor shower Monday just before sunrise.
The penumbral eclipse was a no go here with the recent pervasive cloud cover. It no longer exists.
Anyone who was avoiding the area because it was too loud here that weekend in the middle of August can come back. WEMF has been sold to a bigger outfit, who is focusing on events in large population centres, aka cities. No more party all night, but as a cog in the DJ concert presentation industry, my client says it "suits all the girls who want to walk on stilettos with their tits out to there"...so it suits the scene. Concert over at 11 pm. If they had done that here, it would have been a fine event. Those of us who were not there could have had sleep and skipped the nervous breakdown after hours of thump, thump, thump. Or as I stated at the time, it is contrary to the Geneva Convention to refuse a prisoner sleep; that is a form of torture. All gone now. It's obvious that the leaves are starting to change. It's not that they are turned, but I have been able to see the underlying orange of the maples for most of 2 weeks already.
I don't recall seeing leaf change this way in previous years. As usual, there are some early, stressed changers. There is a flash of red and orange here and there, some yellows with downed leaves (poplar, willow). This part is typical for mid August. What I find unusual is being able to see the underlying colour while the trees are still green. Maybe it's just me? Anyone thinking of colours jaunts to the countryside this autumn should consider booking now. The bookings for September and October are way up from last year. But the sun is out!
I now have confirmation that the annual OFTR trail bike ride is Father's Day weekend, June 14/15. Cabin requests are arriving. Book now to make sure you have a spot. Camping also available for the event, of course. They're back.
WEMF August 12/13 long weekend, on the top of 2 mile hill at the Bush farm. That means we will be able to see the light show at night and likely hear them most of the time too. SO... that means expecting to have the regular peace and quiet of this sylvan paradise disrupted. Maybe it's a good weekend to have a russian dance party? WEMF was last in town July 13/14 2008, and we had no idea what to expect. Now we know. The bookings have begun for those attending the festival. Claudia and Dirk from Owl Rafting came by. They explored the run down Moore's Creek, starting on the leg just downriver from MacKenzie Lake. Looks like another big draw to the area is about to open up. This is the end point for the trip. They are going to have the local outfitter shuttle kayaks to the drop in. Interesting discussions to come. Stay tuned.
Wow, things are just rolling along! The entire world is coming to Madawaska! After years of operating Red Deer, and trying to generate alliances, they are coming to me! We have a digital photography workshop by Digital Wilderness the weekend of July 8/9. Please contact them directly if you are interested in the workshop, I am just doing the accommodation part, and the workshop setting. Accommodation fees are per usual.
