First of the season. They arrived yester e'en. Wow, we got lots done today. This is the first leg of their extended tour of volunteering.
Also, on the weather front, the first unequivocally summer day occurred. I hear Toronto was a stewpot. There are Italians here looking for a suntan (they found some), Italy has been cold and rainy for months. Another client, return of many years, snapped a pic of a bald eagle just before it left it's perch to fly. Same guy was sitting drinking coffee one morning many years ago, and had a red tailed hawk swoop down and grab a mouse within a few feet of his picnic table. He tells me there is a pair of kestrels here, in the campground at the far south end. First sighting of fireflies last night, in the marshy area. Also a June Bug this morning on the screen of my front door.
And strangely, within a week of the black flies, we already have dragonflies. There is usually a much bigger gap. Might make the blackfly season less ferocious if the predator is there on time... The Least Bittern is back, been hearing it for a week but I keep forgetting to tell you all. Lots of other birds, including my hummingbird. Still can't get a fuchsia locally for him, he's been to the porch a couple of times looking for it. Saw a first butterfly this past week also, cherry blossoms are in full swing.
Good weekend, great way to celebrate the end of the world! Excellent camping weather, no real problems with rain. There was a stormburst in the middle of the night that took a tent over on Sunday night, not sure they took the time to set up properly, having arrived at sunset escaping the noise and closeness in Algonquin Park.
To the rest of you who missed the chance, I hope the weather is so good on the upcoming holiday weekends. No one was too cold or wet, sunburns happened. What can I say, the weather forecasters were wrong enough to scare people away. There is a handful of happy campers here. Half a dozen boats passed by on the river yesterday, "local" colour is canoes and kayaks, as usual.
The road is quiet, about 1/5 the traffic last night as would be expected. Fabulous day, warm, bright and sunny, birds are singing. They're back.
WEMF August 12/13 long weekend, on the top of 2 mile hill at the Bush farm. That means we will be able to see the light show at night and likely hear them most of the time too. SO... that means expecting to have the regular peace and quiet of this sylvan paradise disrupted. Maybe it's a good weekend to have a russian dance party? WEMF was last in town July 13/14 2008, and we had no idea what to expect. Now we know. The bookings have begun for those attending the festival. But it is not raining now, indeed the sun has been shining for a couple of hours. I think it is going to be a lovely weekend here. Hopefully not everyone will get tricked into thinking it's a non-starter, listening to the weather forecast every hour can convince you to make indoor plans.
Apparently the rest of Ontario is raining. Only a couple of drizzly moments since yesterday morning here. Ground is dry enough to camp, no pooled water. River is all the way up, no problem getting boats in this year.
Claudia and Dirk from Owl Rafting came by. They explored the run down Moore's Creek, starting on the leg just downriver from MacKenzie Lake. Looks like another big draw to the area is about to open up. This is the end point for the trip. They are going to have the local outfitter shuttle kayaks to the drop in. Interesting discussions to come. Stay tuned.
Wow, things are just rolling along! The entire world is coming to Madawaska! After years of operating Red Deer, and trying to generate alliances, they are coming to me! We have a digital photography workshop by Digital Wilderness the weekend of July 8/9. Please contact them directly if you are interested in the workshop, I am just doing the accommodation part, and the workshop setting. Accommodation fees are per usual.
