A little Felix Cavalieri anyone? Young Rascals? A most excellent song, which very much describes the sun and bird action outside. Slightly below zero, but that won't last. Typical May awakening time thing.

I forgot to mention, heard the first loons Sunday night.
Lots of wildlife checking in. This is a great time to see and hear wildlife, before the weather gets hot, and before there are lots of people around. Just a reminder for all of you who ask about wildlife experiences in July and August... The northern prairies are seeing snow too. It's definitely spring here though. Even though many placess are flooding this spring, the water level in the river here is low. Not sure how that can be, because certainly there was lots of snow to melt. Maybe OPG (Ontario Power Generation) took a page from the book of floods last spring, and drew the level in the reservoir down farther this past winter; there was probably a higher demand for electric power due to the prolonged cold, so it might be a natural adjustment.
At any rate, it is still possible to see the river topography at this point, unlike the last many springs. Now that the rains have backed off, it might mean we are looking at extensive sand beaches this season. That happens every ten years or so, and is always a big hit with vacationers. From now until May 16, you can camp for free and help me clean up the grounds. It's a rake and shovel type of job. Free campfires as well for those who want to help. The only rain date in the bunch is looking like Friday May 9. Beautiful here today, sun is shining, 20C, birds are singing, and the landscape is greening nicely.
No biting bugs either at this time. Call or email to apply! This is the time of year that you can catch them in the river. In other words, lake trout can be caught while shore fishing. The water is still cold in the river, from the freshet, and so the trout are up in the river looking for food coming over the falls with the runoff.
No need for big boat and downrigger. Just some yummy treats. Worms work well. A very well thought out article about the practice of branding.
The New Yorker article link in the article offers insight as well. Vintage persons will recognize that as the name of an album, which is just about impossible to acquire at this point in time. Available on vinyl only, never went to other media. Available on Grooveshark. Yay!
However, it is a fact. It is a beautiful day.! No fire in the house, not needed. Not sunny, but plenty warm outside to enjoy nature. Not raining either. Oops, that is 3X NO! Sorry about the approach, but frankly, I am weary of people complaining about the weather, which is why I am saying what is NOT. Canada is not the sunniest of countries. This past winter apparently would test the temerity of a saint. It was just winter, people! Too many people are young or from other climates, and so we hear the song of "it's so cold!!!!!!". NOT! It's Canada! This is a completely normal spring, unfolding as it should. Rain. Makes the landscape green. Looking forward to a fabulous summer. Hope I don't hear people complaining about the heat in a couple of weeks.... |
