Just goes to show that people remember where the good times are.....
Oh, and it poured in Bancroft and Algonquin Park, but it only spit a little bit here.
So there was no overflow camping here because of that. The place is 5 sites from full without them. Numerous people are here who I have not seen for a couple (or 10) years.

It is raining here.
I know that is disappointing to you action types, but the crowd here was up early canoing, so they are chilling now that the major storm has rumbled in. Very tropical...hopefully this is setting up a mushroom bloom for the holiday weekend. There is still one cabin for Friday/Saturday next weekend, and a handfull of campsites. First come first served as always. Because there are few tourists this weekend (blame the rain in Southern Ontario?), the wildlife is entertaining inside the grounds! A beautiful fox and her kit were out hunting around 6 am. That got the geese off the waterfront bright and early.
BTW, the rain was very light and seems to be over already. Would have been pleasant fishing. Too bad you missed it! Really lovely, Garden of Eden type morning here. This is your long range weather forecast.
Next winter will have little snow. Wasps have abandoned nests 6 feet up and rebuilt below the 2 foot mark. This happens every time Canada Day is in the middle of the week. There are 2 mini long weekends instead of one big crunch. I prefer the 2 mini long weekends.
It's great that so many people are able to clabber together extra days to make a real break of it. Got some people staying 4 nights. We're expecting a fabulous weekend here as well, while southern Ontario is looking at cold and rainy. Come north for the good stuff! It's summer here. This is the type of weather that brings microburst storms, but Environment Canada has taken down the weather watch for the area.
What a fabulous weekend!
The local trail bike ride was this past weekend, Father's Day. There seemed to be about half the participants of 2014. I had to blast in to Bancroft for building supplies on Friday, and the road seemed pretty quiet for a Friday pm. Days around 20C, nights around 12. Some rain some sun. Boringly pleasant.?! Little downpour this afternoon, very refreshing. I still find it odd that the black fly level is so low. I haven't been using any bug dope, even when cutting grass, even my nontoxic types, and I have fewer than 10 bites and have to look hard to find them.
Last day of April, and the forecast is fabulous as far as can be seen. Sun, warm days, warm nights (above zero), low chance of precipitation...we have survived!
Anyone want to come camping this weekend and help clean up? It's going to be a fabulous season for canoing and kayaking.
The beach goes on forever! Unless there is a LOT of rain, it's going to be a low water summer. That's after a couple of years of flooding, right? Nature likes balance. Having been through this cycle before, there are a couple of things you can consider. When the beach is big, the waterfall is taller. Fishing is excellent, because the same amount of fish are in a smaller amount of water. Beach lovers can find lots of terrain to play upon. CAUTION: due to an aberration that occurred when Ontario Hydro (or whatever it was called in 1939) expropriated the farmers along the river to create a reservoir, some of the river bottom is privately owned. If you stay on the water you are in the clear. Big boats may not be able to get into the system if the water doesn't come up substantially. Pretty sure that every time it's a big beach summer it is a hot summer. Snow is gone.
The tree stumps in the river are almost covered with water. Geese are back. Robins are everywhere. Sunrise is greeted with lots of chirpy happy sounds. Soon time to till the garden! It's just a skiff, but it is snow.
The writing is on the wall...it's a wrap. The water lines are empty, and everything is being sorted and stored for the future. People ask me about winter accommodation. It is possible, but the situation is different. There is no running water and so washrooms become the outhouse. Water does not come to the cabin. Seeing how many people bring bottled water in the summer, this shouldn't be a problem. ! Bedding service is not available off season. Accommodation must be prearranged, because the schedule is limited. Anyone who is interested can contact via the regular channels for details. Hope road construction season is over.... Absolutely glorious day! It started out chilly, but got better. Now that the sun has gone down, the sky is incredible. It's a while before the moon is up, so it's a great night for stargazing.
Canoeing and mushroom picking were appropriate activities, time well spent in the great outdoors. Wild flash storm, including hail. It only warrants mention because most of the really intense weather of the last 6 months has completely missed this area. Almost every summer I have been here there has been a serious thunderstorm; they were mild this past season by comparison.
Arrivals are late, as usual, as it is Friday.
It's not raining, though there was about 5 minutes worth earlier. So often people forego the trip out of the city because of the weather forecast. It's usually not nearly as scarey as it looks digitally. The real deal is fine, once again. Wow! What a great weekend. I think it was the best weather weekend of the entire season! Sunny, hot, calm (canoeing was fantastic; also almost no motor boats in the river, so safe) and the colours of the landscape were phenomenal.
There were more people turned away who tried to book in at the last moment than any other weekend this season. Unfortunately, they lost out to people who made a plan in advance, inconsequent of weather. Camping was completely possible, and all I had to offer. There are cabins available for this upcoming weekend, also for Thanksgiving. Some last minute planners may be able to get a spot. After my post yesterday, we did have another wave of storms move through. Bancroft got smacked heavily, by the looks of things, to the south. Rain here was light, but the thunder and lightning show was spectacular. Serious compression thunder, such that you can feel the air pressure from the clap INSIDE a building!
Spectacular ! Right here!
It's storming all over Ontario. There was a student killed by lightning strike in Waterloo this morning. Barrie has reported hail and things that threaten tornado. Ottawa is flooded and has power outages. Here? Stormy skies, a little wind, some thunder and spit spit spit. That's it. Weather Network called rain for 1:30. Environment Canada has big scary banners all over the page for Madawaska. Too bad weather forecasting has so little to do with the great outdoors. I could have told them we weren't getting rain; the grass was wet this morning. There is no dew when there is rain coming, a much more specific to location forecast. The other problem is that the insurance companies have caused the weather forecasters to broadcast on the fear channel. On the other hand, if people actually understood forecasts... The cooler air mass is here already, so the threat of conflagration has passed with a spit. After everyone being afraid of rain this weekend, and camping numbers suffering consequently, you will all be happy to know that it is now pouring buckets (3:30 pm). Everyone is gone except a couple of regular campers who headed out in a boat 5 minutes before the heavens opened.
The forecast today said no rain. Hahahahahahaha Cabins are busy, but there is still camping available for anyone making last minute plans. Don't be put off by the weather forecast. It looks to me like we can expect some drizzle Sunday for a short time.
Buckets of rain to start the day. Now it's very ... calm
Campapalooza is folding up, about to disappear into the mists. Yes, mists. It's almost raining, again. Who would have thought we would have such crappy weather in the middle of August? 21 children didn't seem to notice, as they swam, flew kites, caught frogs, played chase games, kicked soccer balls, canoed...the list goes on. Camp was well organized, and things went off mostly without a hitch. The rain amounts were inconsequential during the day; the larger amounts fell at night and early in the morning.
Talk about next summer's event is already on simmer. The holiday weekend is almost upon us. I could have rented 45 cabins for 2 of those 3 nights, but alas, there are only 4, which most times is just about the right number. No doubt, because of the crappy weather forecast (and the generally flaky weather this summer so far) people are reticent to camp, but I think it is going to be an excellent weekend. The weather forecast will change, yet again! So campers are expected, but not the usual sellout crowd.
If you are still looking for a spot, I've got a couple of serviced sites for trailers and a dozen tentsites yet to fill. Come on by! Calling ahead isn't a bad idea. You'll possibly get the answering machine, because I have lots to do outside to prepare, but I will call you back ASAP. Both raspberries and blueberries are coming along. There aren't a lot yet, but some ripen every day.
Mushrooms are happening but also not yet in big numbers. With the rainy blasts we are having, and the warm nights, I can't help but expect big bloom soon. That being said, it became cool this morning, which made for sweatshirt weather until about 2 pm. Then it became hot and sunny. Expect flaky weather. That is this year's normal. Bring 3 season clothing. Always a good idea when you are camping anyway, right? Layers, extra socks, 2 of everything even if you think you only need one pair of pants what happens if you rip them, Big Boy? Anybody got a big skirt? I've got stories. Everyone is anonymous unless expressly in agreement to be the known subject of humourous reconnoiters. Well, the lazy hazy days of summer it's not. Not cold out, but not hot. I wonder if that is why Bancroft is so quiet? I didn't realize it until I was heading back here yesterday, but there were no traffic hangups on the main drag. Traffic was like off season levels. The bridge repair is finished; I think that is way ahead of schedule.
On the other hand, despite a bit of rain, it's very enjoyable out. |
